Work-Life Unbalanced? Try Work-Life Harmony

I was on the driving range, really struggling with my golf swing. Usually when that happens, it’s because I’m not balanced at the finish. I’ve come to know that about myself. But then, when I really started to think about why I was not balanced at the finish, it was really because my entire swing just wasn’t in harmony. Maybe my legs were moving faster than my arms. Or maybe I was jerking my arms too fast and my body couldn’t catch up. When it came down to it, all the parts of my body were not working together, in harmony, when my golf swing was out-of-sync. When I put a great golf swing together, my feet, legs, hips, back, arms, shoulders, head, everything, is in harmony together.

That same insight goes with leaders and their life as well, and that’s what I talk about in the video. So many leaders are struggling with balancing their work responsibilities and their life responsibilities. Just look at the work of my friend and colleague, Jennifer Deal. Balance is so tough and maybe unrealistic.

So, instead of work-life balance, maybe we should think about work-life harmony. Can your work and life be in harmony together? How can the aspects of your work help you in your personal life? How can things that happen in your personal life enrich your work experience? How can the two coexist together?

You aren’t perfect. All you can be is your best. Be your best at work. Be your best at home. Even if you can’t spend the time you want in an aspect of your life, be your best at it when you are in it. Be in harmony.
